So I know it doesn’t come out until tomorrow but I want to do an album review. The title of the album and the song I am a god, are the most thought provoking to me. I wonder does he mean a god among people, specifically black people. Does he mean he is a god because he can see things other people seemingly cannot or will not speak on. Or that he is who he is regardless of how others feel about it, a god of his own destiny and he can tell anybody what to do. Or does he mean that as a black person he has to be five times as good as a white person so that automatically puts him in that category. Someone wrote something about how black people aren’t perceived as human so perhaps he was making that reference. Ultimately I feel like after I turned it over in my head for a while, I at least pinned down the meaning of the title. I was thinking about the iconic phrasing that he did post-Katrina. I said to myself, damn they always crucify you for telling the truth. To me that’s an instant comparison between him and Jesus. Whether or not this comparison is deserved remains to be unknown.

I think On Sight is a perfect opener for a KW album. The lyrics and break in the middle are classic KW and fit in seamlessly. The song announces he’s back perfectly and is one of the tracks produced by Daft Punk. Black Skinhead is an interesting composition in that it mirrors the sound of old school punk rock. Even as a KW fan I can’t say the basic sound is new but the combination is. Is it dope to put punk in a rap song? Certainly and it works. His lines “I been a menace for the longest/but I ain’t finished/I’m devoted/and you know it” and “If I knew what I knew in the past I would have been blacked out on your ass are ones to pay attention to. This album has influence from Jamaican dancehall in lyrics and use of the vocals. That influence is seen heavily on the beginning of the next track. I Am A God is amazing in that it comes on like some Epic background music to the creation of a masterpiece. To me the irony in the song is when KW talks to Jesus and Jesus refers to him as Yeezus. Honestly I don’t know that I get the screaming on the track.“Since the tight jeans they never liked you, Pink-ass polos with a fucking backpak.” He’s a Smart-Alec but aware of the effect his success has on other people and he wants them to get over it. I think this is also referencing the controversy of when he wore a kilt on the stage. When it is a white guy wearing a kilt no one says shit but when it’s a black guy people from his own community label it as gay and effeminate. I don’t understand how anyone that talks about pussy so much could be considered to be fronting but moving on. New Slaves is relevant to today’s existence as a black person. Everyone is talking about his reference to Privately Owned Prisons but they should be paying more attention to the first verse. He mentions how he has a fashion line but that unlike his counterparts they wanted him to be doing everything to give him any credit at all. He then makes the thought-provoking statement that “There’s broke nigga racism, that’s that don’t touch anything in the store/ then there’s rich nigga racism, that’s that come here please buy more. What you want a Bentley, fur coat, a diamond chain? All you blacks want all the same things”. Basically saying that whether you broke or rich you still get classified as a nigga that only wants the same bullshit as everyone else (“Even if you in the band, you still a nigga”). An attempt to separate us from having personalities. I also like the line about how corporations are trying to control him so that they can get their piece of him. Hold My Liquor comes on sounding like the title. Booze soaked and as the lyrics suggest funneling out of a tree filled room. Chief Keef references how he can’t handle liquor but most women cannot handle him. Kanye comes on the track chirping about how he is out the coma and talks about someone who he has been out of a relationship for five years but yet he still ends up on her couch and she still takes care of him no matter what. “Baby girl he’s a loaner/ late night organ donor/ After that he disowns you/ After that it’s just hopeless/ soulmates become soulless/ And bitch I’m back out my coma”. He also talks about that ridiculous male ideal that if he just does this one thing he can have her back and own her. In a weird way, it has a romantic but tragic air to it. I’m In It completely obliterates the air of the previous song with it’s honest but sexual intent. I believe that Travi$ Scott is doing the vocals in the break of this song as he did on I Am A God and it sounds phenomenal. Even the vocals of the woman moaning in the beginning lend to the theme of the song and Justin Vernon’s vocals slide over the song smooth.

Blood On The Leaves seems strange to me. The sample is Nina Simone’s Strange Fruit and if you have heard her version or Billie Holiday’s you understand the heavy message of the song. I am still searching for hidden depths in the song so perhaps I missed something but it talks about a setup of a party and how things have changed but as Jon Pareles of the New York Times said, it seems like a weird setting. KW’s lyrics on the rest of the album bring race in to the picture but this song doesn’t really reference that at all. Guilt Trip is chill and again references past relationships. Personally “Star Wars fur, yeah I’m rocking Chewbacca” is it for me. I feel like it is talking more about the crafting of a relationship and I especially like the sample they used. It also talks about the name’s title near the end, “if you loved me so much, why’d you let me go?”

Send It Up has Klaxons on the beginning which always signal good things and King Louie’s vocals come in like a stormfront, steady and unrelenting. Kanye comes off cocky and like it’s well deserved on this track. He talks about his girl having to call in because everyone will know what she was doing last night. Also the line about the Bentley will surely be a fave. The last song Bound 2 is perfect as it hearkens back to old school Kanye West. “Them other niggas lame and you know it now, when a real nigga hold you down you supposed to drown”. I also wonder if it is talking about Kim Kardashian. Whoever he’s talking about the Charlie Wilson part and the references to Jerome off of Martin make the song for me. He talks about taking it one month at a time.

I really love this album as always. I am a long-time Kanye fan. I remember walking through snow and blizzards with my backpack when I used to live in the South Suburbs outside of Chicago and listening to him on my Sony CD player. For me Kanye will always be the hometown hero so I know that lends me some bias. I like how Kanye has scaled down his samples so that we hear more of his vocals. At first I was looking for a theme, like on Watch The Throne but then I thought about Kanye as more of an artist and his LP’s of the past and I realized it is more in line with how he makes a record. There are still some songs I have a raised eyebrow at, in that I am still trying to figure it out. As individual songs it is amazing but I like that it shows his growth as an artist. I am excited to buy it tomorrow and to get Jay-Z’s upcoming Magna Carta on July 4.
